Course Overview
GA Slang:
Lab: In The Glam Academy, “Lab” refers to the process of students learning, creating, and styling a specific look on a model. Most labs include “Studio” (see next term).
Studio: Also known as our photo studio. Studio is our second space where we do our photoshoots. This space also serves as our model holding area, and a place for students to style their models. We have wardrobe, jewelry, props, and a ton of other items to personalize each student’s shoot.
Slabs: Specific hands on activities to gain a better understanding of a particular topic.
Sketch: Sketch refers to an activity where you are using makeup, pencils, or any other material on a heavyweight art paper to gain a better understanding of a particular technique.
Glamology: AKA Education or Classroom environment. Glamology is done primarily on the first two days filled with Slabs and Sketch to gain a visual and hands on understanding of the material.
Teaching Philosophy:
In a world where we have a universal scale for almost every school of thought, you would think there would be a universal scale for makeup. But unfortunately there is not. There are no “facts” per say. There is only opinion and preference.
Because of this, most identify what they understand to be a “truth” about makeup as an actual “fact.” And the way that most people gather these truths are typically by the dominant female role in their life. Meaning if mom loves coral lipstick than you either love it too (or passively revolt by wearing pink). But either way, it’s some sort of compass for you to navigate the world of makeup.
I can remember being told at a young age “black liner doesn’t look good on anyone.” And I actually believed that! I accepted that as a valid, justified truth, as much as I accepted a simple math equation.
So what does “makeup artist” mean? Well let’s look at the phrase. We have the word ‘Makeup’ modifying the noun ‘Artist’.
According to Wiki: An artist is a person engaged in one or more of any of a broad spectrum of activities related to creating art, practicing the arts, and/or demonstrating an art.
In the arts, a medium is a material used by an artist or designer to create a work.
So basically “makeup” is the material that we choose to work with and “artist” is our title.
So what sort of universal scale can a makeup artist use? Maybe the scales and laws that all artists use regardless of medium—that of color, shadow, light, dimension, and perception. This is the educational foundation of The Glam Academy.
We show our students that they most likely understand makeup and beauty through a lens defined by preference, trends, and societies definition of “beauty.”
By extracting this lens and using the same laws of color and light than any other artist would—the student is able to perceive makeup and its capacity at an entirely different level.
This entire understanding happens over the first two days of The Glam Academy, where the student is immersed in a world of education that will undoubtedly have an enormous impact on their ability to transform a face.
After this new perception is developed the student will find their natural talent pouring through their hands, as they are now free of un-justified “rules.”
Course Levels:
Basic—40 hours
The basic course is well beyond “basic” and although it is seemingly short, the students leave officially transformed. Through a combination of artistic and business skill sets— this will leave both the student who knows nothing about makeup and the makeup artist looking to refine their skills feeling equally impacted. In this portion of the program—we change the way people see makeup. It is through this now broken filter that the individual can see various techniques and tools as a skeleton and template to apply endless versions and combinations.Students receive a Makeup Kit & Brushes.
Basic and Senior—90 hours
The senior level is for students that have gone through all of the fundamentals’, but want to go the extra mile. This student truly wants to enhance their portfolio with images that show a wide range of work and their ability to cater to a variety of clients and needs.
This course is about perfecting technique and smoothing the bridge between the program and the students own business. With both basic and senior- the student is given work well beyond their time at the program to build their artistry and business. It is through these small collective steps that the student eventually has their own working business.
Students Receive a Makeup Kit, Brushes, and an Airbrush Machine.
