Wing It Out: Precision Liner Techniques

We have now launched a new series of workshops designed to exclusively focus and zoom in on are a particular technique.  Unlike our half and full day workshops that touch on a range of topics, these workshops allow students to zoom in on one area, allowing people to pick and choose which “Spotlight” focus is relevant to their needs.

Wing It OutOur Latest “Spotlight Workshop” isolates the art of the perfect wing!  People remember 20% of what they learn and 90% of what they do.  So in all of our workshops, we give our students tactile experiences for every piece of education.

“Wing it on” is a two hour workshop exclusively dedicated to perfecting the art of “The Wing”.  To effectively throw a spotlight on every technical aspect of “the wing” we will isolate every artistic principle and technique that  allow us to confidently create a set of perfectly symmetrical, eye-enhancing lines.

We start with three “Slabs” In the “Sketch” category.  A Slab is an artistic experiment allowing students to understand the “action/ reaction” for a particular artistic principle.  “Sketch” is a category where students work in a sketchbook with makeup to conduct the “Slab”.

Slab 1– Liners:

In this lab students will explore the endless range of eyeliners on the market and identify characteristics common to each.  By isolating the finish, dry time, texture, and usability of each liner category– students are able to gain a better understanding of why certain products behave in certain ways.

Slab 2–Strokes:

In this Slab/Sketch students will work with several types of brushes commonly used to create the wing. The group will learn about the definitive properties and areas of all brushes and then zoom in on the spectrum of cuts and bristols specific to a “liner” brush.  They will learn how to create a variety of lines using various combinations of brushes, liner, stroke technique’s and pressure with liner in their sketch book..  By connecting each component to a physical experience, students are able to truly understand the enormous impact that a slight change in pressure or pitch can have on the final product.

Slab 3–Eye Charts:

This Slab combines the knowledge and skills learned in the previous two, allowing students to effectively construct a wing.  The group will get “eye charts” (pre-drawn eyes) and create a range of “winged” eyeliner looks using “The Box” technique. The Box uses different parts of the skull as a guideline to construct symmetrical liner.  Students will be guided through the steps of the box taking into consideration the angle of the brush, the pressure, the movement, the technique and the placement.

Liner Lab:

In this Grande Finale, students will work in mirrors create the wing via step and repeat instruction.  Alexa will first demonstrate a step on herself and then guide the students as they re-create that very step on themselves.  By isolating each micro-step specific to constructing perfect, symmetrical eyeliner, students are able to approach the look as a whole with a specific strategy–understanding the precise action/ reaction for every possible movement.  Not only does the group leave with fabulous lined eyes, but the technical skills to recreate them over and over again.
